UP FROM THE ROOTS: Feat: Dj Mickey Perez. Mickey is not a pioneer of any Disco, Hip Hop, House or Techno scene. He never saw Larry Levan spin at the Paradise Garage. He never went to the Loft to jam with David Mancuso or the Gallery to see Nicky Siano nor did he jack to what Ron Hardy was playing at the Music Box. He’s never even been to Detroit! In fact, you’ve probably only heard of Mickey (or heard him play) if you’ve seen him DJ in Brooklyn, Manhattan or London.

An American born DJ of Latin American descent, Mickey was born in Chicago, IL in 1978 to an Ecuadorean woman & Cuban man. The music Mickey heard growing up ranged from Donna Summers, Jackson 5, Michael Jackson and James Brown to Celia Cruz and Beny More. When he moved to Miami in the summer of 1990 he began listening The Beatles, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Gangstarr, Wu-Tang Clan and 2Pac.

In 2002, on the two-year anniversary of his father’s death, Mickey moved to New York City to pursue a career in filmmaking. After working in reality television & advertising as a producer for five years, Mickey became disillusioned with his career. His passion rapidly turned from filmmaking, directing and editing to learning to DJing. His goal was to incorporate all the great Caribbean, Latin and African music from the late 60’s, 70’s and 80s into his sets along with the Funk & Disco. He figures that’s what Levan or Hardy would have done if they were alive and jammin’ today.
